There's been a trend over the last few years among dog owners to teach thier dogs to communicate using talk buttons. This technique was pioneered by Christina and Stella Hunger (speech-language pathologist and dog, respectively). The buttons, a tool used in Christina's field, play a recorded word when activated and are easily pressed by hands, noses, and paws. There is some controversy surrounding this new communication tool. While it's clear it can be very useful, owners often fall prey to the totally understandable urge to read meaning in "conversations" where there may or may not actually be any to begin with, especially as they add buttons for more abstract ideas.
