The seder opens with kiddush, the sanctification over wine and a ritual sanctification of time. Today, we often feel short on time; that time controls us. Kadesh reminds us that true freedom and self-respect is to master and control time for ourselves, to shape our life in accordance with our values. Additionally, all Jewish celebrations, from holidays to weddings, include wine as a symbol of our joy – not to mention a practical way to increase that joy. The seder starts with wine and then gives us three more opportunities to refill our cup and drink.

Our people suffered under the yoke of slavery, and God promised our deliverance. We raise the first cup and repeat God’s promise to our ancestors and to us:

“I will bring you out from the burdens of the Egyptians.”

This is the promise of awareness. When we acknowledge and address the pain of bondage, we become God’s partners in liberation.

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, borei p'ri hagafen.

Praise to You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of universe, who creates of the fruit of the vine.

(Everyone drinks their first glass of wine.)
