THE PARABLE OF THE STARFISH An old man was walking along a beach when he happened upon a young girl picking up starfish, one by one, and throwing them gently into the water. He asked the girl, “Why are you throwing these starfish into the ocean?” She replied, “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they will die on the beach.” The old man looked at the girl and remarked, “But there are miles and miles of beach and many starfish along each mile. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The young girl listened politely and smiled. Then she bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it back in the ocean, and turned to the old man. “It made a difference for that one,” she replied.
