Shabbat Candles

Tonight, we light candles to signify the start of the of our passover seder, but also to welcome the beginning of shabbat. The lighting of the shabbat candles is traditionally carried out by Jewish Women. While Jewish women have traditionally been excluded from many other elements of religious ritual, the lighting of the shabbat candles evoke a long history of Jewish women bringing light to darkness and creating a holy space.

Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynoo melech ha-olam, asher keedshanoo b’meetzvotav v’tzeevanoo l’hadleek ner shel shabbat v'shel yom tov.

Praised are You, Lord our God, Whose presence fills the universe, Who has sanctified our lives through Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the shabbat and festival lights.
